Marcus D'Amico, the Original Mouse From 'Tales of the City,' Dies at 55
He was not on the list.
He also starred on the stage in 'Angels in America' and 'An Inspector Calls' and worked for Kubrick in 'Full Metal Jacket.'
Marcus D'Amico, the actor perhaps best known for his portrayal of the original Michael "Mouse" Tolliver on the Armistead Maupin miniseries Tales of the City, has died. He was 55.
D'Amico died Dec. 16 of pneumonia in Oxfordshire, England, his sister, Melissa D'Amico, head of the U.K. youth acting agency APA Talent, told The Hollywood Reporter.
"Not only have I lost my beautiful brother, but the world has lost an incredibly talented actor and director. Words cannot express how much I miss him," she wrote in an Instagram post.
D'Amico's Mouse is the sweet gardener (and gay confidante of Laura Linney's Mary Ann Singleton) who is diagnosed with AIDS on the San Francisco-set, six-hour Tales of the City, which premiered on Channel 4 in the U.K. in 1993 before airing on PBS in the States.
The character was played by Paul Hopkins in two subsequent miniseries in 1998 and 2001 and then by Murray Bartlett in the 2019 Netflix reboot. He even spawned a Maupin spinoff best-seller, Michael Tolliver Lives, first published in 2007.
Born on Dec. 4, 1965, in Frankfurt, Germany and raised in the U.K., D'Amico earned an Olivier Award nomination for best actor for playing Louis in the National Theatre's 1992 production of Tony Kushner's Angels in America.
On Broadway, he received a Theatre World award for his turn as Eric Birling opposite Philip Bosco and Rosemary Harris in a 1994-95 revival of An Inspector Calls, directed by Stephen Daldry.
D'Amico also appeared in such films as Superman II (1980) and Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket (1987) — as the soldier nicknamed "Hand Job" — and more recently had a role in 2018 on TNT's The Alienist: Angel of Darkness.
Survivors include his mother, Patricia; sisters Melissa and Lindy; half-brother Michael; daughter Sapphire; and son Chiron.
