Our Gang Star Jean Darling Dies at 93
She was not on the list.
Jean Darling, the actress who played Jean in Our Gang as a child, died Friday in Rodermark, Germany, after suffering from a lung infection, the New York Times reports. She was 93.
Born Dorothy Jean LeVake in Santa Monica, Calif., Darling began appearing in movies when she was just 6 months old. At age 4, she was cast in Our Gang as Jean, and went on to star in several Our Gang short subject silent films and "talkies" in the late 1920s. She also starred as the young title character in 1934's Jane Eyre, originated the role of Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel on Broadway in 1945 and hosted her own NBC television show, A Date with Jean Darling.
In 1954, Darling married magician Reuben Bowen and began touring with his magic show. They eventually separated after nearly 20 years of marriage.
Darling was also a prolific author who wrote a novel, two autobiographies and hundreds of short stories. She most recently starred in 2013's The Butler's Tale.
She is survived by a son and two grandsons.
