Chad Everett, star of 1970s TV drama ‘Medical Center,’ dies at 75

Chad Everett, the strikingly handsome actor best known for portraying a thoughtful surgeon in a 1970s medical drama has died. Everett won two Golden Globe nominations for playing Dr. Joe Gannon on Medical Center.
It aired from 1969 through 1976, one of the longest running medical shows on TV, according to Hollywood Reporter, which said Everett also owned 15% of the series.
Everett's career spanned about four decades, and stretched from The Dakotas, a television western from the early sixties, to February of this year, when he appeared in an episode of Castle, a crime drama.
His daughter, Katherine Thorpe, told the AP her father had suffered from lung cancer over the past year and a half.
Everett appeared in a myriad of television shows including Murder She Wrote, Love Boat and Without A Trace, notes the AP. The report adds his unforgettable film role came in Mulholland Drive in which he's "a lothario who engages in a steamy audition with a young ingeneue portrayed by Naomi Watts".
His film credits include Get Yourself a College Girl (1964), Made in Paris (1966) with Ann-Margret, The Singing Nun (1969) with Debbie Reynolds, The Firechasers (1971), The Jigsaw Murders (1989) and Gus Van Sant‘s remake of Psycho (1998).
Everett was selected by the family of John Wayne to be the voice of the animatronic figure of the legendary actor in Disney MGM Studios’ Great Movie Ride in Orlando. He also recorded a couple of albums, including 1971’s All Strung Out, on which he covers “Ain’t No Sunshine.”
Everett was born in South Bend, Ind., and graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit before moving to Los Angeles and becoming a contract player with MGM. He famously battled and beat alcoholism in the 1980s.
He is survived by daughters Katherine and Shannon and six grandchildren. His wife of 45 years, actress Shelby Grant, died of a brain aneurysm in June 2011.
