Barry Mitchell obit

Former Queen bassist Barry Mitchell dies

He was not on the list.

Barry Mitchell, Queen's second bassist, has died.

The group's official archivist, Greg Brooks, announced Mitchell's passing in a Facebook post.

"Terribly sad news just received that early Queen bass player, Barry Mitchell, has passed away," he wrote alongside a throwback black-and-white photo of Mitchell. "His anecdotes at the convention were fascinating and offered rare insight. He will be greatly missed."

Mitchell's age and cause of death have not been publicly disclosed.

Mitchell replaced Queen's original bassist Mike Grose in 1970, but his time with the band was short-lived. He only performed 13 gigs alongside legendary members Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor between August 1970 and January 1971.

After his departure, the trio performed with Doug Bogie for two gigs before John Deacon joined them in February 1971, completing the We Will Rock You band's most famous line-up.

During an interview with Rolling Stone in 2018, Mitchell was asked why he left the now-legendary group, and he initially joked that he was "fired because they thought I was useless".

He then conceded that he "wasn't enthusiastic enough about their music" during those early years.

"This didn't necessarily go in the direction I wanted to go," he explained. "At the time, they weren't at all the cult band you all know. I didn't see the potential. It's crazy to say this now but it's the truth."

Before Queen, Mitchell played in the band Crushed Butler, later named Tiger.

He is survived by two daughters, according to his Facebook page.

Posting a snap of Barry during his time with the band, Greg wrote: 'Terribly sad news just received that early Queen bass player, Barry Mitchell, has passed away.

'His anecdotes at the convention were fascinating and offered rare insight. He will be greatly missed.'

Fans have since shared their own tributes to Barry, who they described as an 'incredible guitarist'.

Barry was Queen's second bassist, staying with them for six months between 1970 and 1971. He joined a few months after Freddie Mercury became the band's lead singer, with the line-up already featuring guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor.

Caroline Langford obit

Israeli actress Caroline Langford, star of Yehuda Barkan films, dies at 68

Caroline Langford, star of Yehuda Barkan's 1980s prank films, died of cancer; she appeared in Israeli films and TV series and met Assi Dayan, her future husband and later ex-husband, on the set of 'King for a Day'

She was not on the list.

Actress Caroline Langford, who became known in Israel for her roles in prank films and was the ex-wife of Assi Dayan and mother of Lior Dayan, has died at age 68. She died Friday of cancer.

Caroline Langford was born in London in 1958 to Shirley and Barry Langford, who worked as a television director in Britain and later in Israel. The family immigrated to Israel when Caroline was 14.

She began her career as a singer but later became known as an actress in the 1980s, appearing in films including "Girls," "King for a Day" and "Am Yisrael Hai." She was particularly associated with the prank films of Yehuda Barkan and Yigal Shilon, including "Hayeh Ahaltah Otah" and "Nipagesh Bachof."

Langford was married to actor and director Assi Dayan, whom she met while appearing in his film "King for a Day." She won the Kinor David award for her performance in the film.

The couple had a son, Lior Dayan. After their divorce, Lior was placed with a foster family at Kibbutz Dvir in the Negev, while Langford left Israel, first for London and later for New York. She married again and had a second child, a daughter, Daniela, before that marriage also ended in divorce. She later met Gil Bankstein, a former Israeli, and married him. The couple lived together in Los Angeles.

Langford previously spoke to ynet about her relationship with Dayan, who died in 2014. "We had a very good relationship in recent years. I met him every time I came to Israel. The last time I saw Assi, we talked about how we had become grandparents. He was very happy about it," she said.

Over the past decade, Langford appeared in several Israeli television series, including "Sisters." In 2013, she also appeared alongside her son Lior on the reality series "Connected." In 2020, she appeared in "Normal," a series created by her son and inspired by his own life, playing his mother.

"Of course, Lior is my biggest scar," she told ynet in an interview. "For years, I was haunted by guilt over how I could leave him when he was 2 and why he had to grow up with a foster family on a kibbutz.

"Today I understand that I suffered from postpartum depression, but back then it wasn't recognized, and Assi certainly didn't make things any easier for me during that period. I was convinced I was a terrible person. I left Israel after four years, after I got divorced, and no one thought to ask why Assi wasn't raising Lior. The woman is always the one who gets blamed."

Langford eventually managed to rebuild her relationship with her son and later helped him through drug rehabilitation.

"Lior and I had a healing experience," she said. "I was here with him for two and a half years during his rehabilitation. Today we're in a different place. We have a wonderful relationship."

Two-Time WSOP Bracelet Winner Brent Carter Passes Away

Old-School Player Recorded Numerous Top Finishes In '90s

He was not on the list.

Well-respected player and two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Brent Carter recently died at age 77. The cause of death is so far unknown, but it follows a series of heart attacks and strokes he experienced over the last several years.

Carter collected more than $3 million in live winnings in a tournament career spanning the 1980s to 2015. The biggest score of his career came in 1995, when Carter finished third in the WSOP main event for $302,750.

His first bracelet came in 1991, when Carter took down a $1,500 no-limit hold’em event for $166,800. He added a second in 1994 after winning a $1,500 limit Omaha event for $83,400.

Family and friends remember a generous man who was always ready to help others.

“Brent was one of the kindest people I ever knew,” Jane Paquette, Carter’s partner of 32 years, told PokerNews. “He wasn’t an angel but never accepted anything for helping someone. When Brent won something, everyone got something.”

Long Career In Game

In a career spanning about 30 years, Carter had numerous other top finishes, including winning in other series that were popular in the 1990s. Some of those included the Hall of Fame Poker Classic, Amarillo Slim’s Super Bowl of Poker, the Southern Poker Championship, and others.

Beyond his two bracelets, Carter scored three WSOP runner-up finishes as well. He was a contemporary of other well-known players from the ‘80 and ‘90s, including Stu Ungar, Dan Harrington, Barbara Enright, Henry Orenstein, Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, and others.

Carter also won a WSOP Circuit ring in 2012 after finishing atop a $350 pot-limit Omaha tournament for $21,135. He previously was involved in the harness racing industry after developing a love of horses in high school. He saw some similarities between the two sports.

“At the poker table, you’re up against eight people and you’re all trying to figure out a strategy to get all the chips,” Carter said after the win in 2012. “In a harness race, you have eight, nine, or 10 horses and you’re all trying to figure out a strategy to get your horse there first. The best horse doesn’t always win… and the best hand doesn’t always win.”

Revenge Plot Gone Wrong

The poker pro drew headlines in 2021 after sending white powder to the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) headquarters in Schenectady, New York, on four different occasions. Following an FBI investigation, he pleaded guilty in federal court to the hoax. He ultimately was sentenced to time served.

His reasoning for the ruse reportedly dated back to 1976 when the commission suspended his license as part of an unfounded cheating investigation. Carter was cleared of the allegations and reinstated.

Several other elder statesmen of the game have also passed away in recent years. Poker theorist and prolific author David Sklansky died in March at age 78.

John Strzemp, former casino executive and runner-up in the 1997 WSOP main event, passed away in 2025 at age 73. The poker world lost a true legend in 2024 when Brunson died at age 89.

Michael Wright Dies: ‘The Five Heartbeats’ Star Was 70

He was not on the list.

Actor Michael Wright, known for his roles in The Five Heartbeats, Sugar Hill, V and Oz, died Aug. 19 in Los Angeles. He was 70.

“It is with profound sadness and an unimaginable heaviness in my heart that I share the passing of my beloved husband, Michael Wright,” his wife Susan Wright wrote on Instagram.

Citing a statement from the family, TMZ reported that Wright died from heart failure coupled with complications from Marchiafava-Bignam disease.

Wright made his debut in the 1979 coming-of-age drama The Wanderers. For his second feature, Robert Altman’s 1983 Streamers, he shared the Best Actor Award at the Venice Film Festival with the rest of the main cast.

In 1991, Wright went on to play one of the five leads, troubled singer Eddie King, Jr., in Robert Townsend’s musical drama The Five Heartbeats.

In features, he also appeared in The Principal, Sugar Hill, Money Talks, Point Black and The Interpreter.

In TV, Wright starred in the 1980s sci-fi franchise V, which spanned two miniseries and a TV series and had a major recurring role on HBO’s Oz. Most recently, he did an arc on the CW’s The Black Lightning.

“Michael was a husband, a father (Manon Wright, Byron Barr, Brittney Briggs, Brianna Barr, Sir Barr), a grandfather (Yoko), loved one, a friend, and an extraordinary artist whose work touched generations,” Susan Wright wrote.
