Justin Hardy Dead at 61: 'The Wicker Man' Filmmaker Dies Just Weeks Before 'Wrath of the Gods' Premiere

Justin Hardy, son of Robin Hardy, completes 'The Wicker Man' trilogy with 'Wrath of the Gods' before his untimely death.

He was not on the list.

Justin Hardy, the British filmmaker who completed Wrath of the Gods, the long-planned final chapter in The Wicker Man trilogy, has died aged 61 after a heart attack on Friday night, just weeks before the film's London premiere.

Hardy had recently finished work on Wrath of the Gods, billed as the concluding chapter of the Wicker Man trilogy that began with his father Robin Hardy's 1973 film and continued with The Wicker Tree in 2011. The new film is due to premiere at genre festival FrightFest in Leicester Square on 28 August.

In a statement, Hardy's family said they were 'devastated' by his sudden death and 'heartbroken' that he would not live to see the film open.

They described him as 'so full of life right to the end' and 'incredibly energised to be working towards premiering his latest film this month', calling him 'a man of family, of boundless creativity, and of devotion for everyone he held dear'.

He is survived by his wife Larissa and their four children, Sam, Ludo, Nico and Summer.

How Justin Hardy Reforged a Folk-Horror Landmark

The news follows a late-career burst of activity that saw Hardy step further into the legacy of his father's most famous work. In 2024 he and his brother Dominic released the documentary Children of the Wicker Man, examining both the enduring popularity of the original film and the toll its making took on their family.

The 1973 The Wicker Man, starring Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee, follows a police sergeant sent to a remote Scottish island to investigate a missing girl, only to uncover a pagan community with its own rituals. It flopped on release but later acquired a cult following and is now regarded as one of Britain's defining horror films.

After Robin Hardy died in 2016 aged 86, his wish to complete a trilogy around the Wicker Man myth did not vanish with him. His sons were later approached about the dormant third film, which Dominic said became the 'impetus to close the chapter on the films'.

Wrath of the Gods grew out of material found in a script Robin Hardy had written years earlier. It stars Game of Thrones actor Francis Magee and Norwegian performer Christiane Schaerdemose, and was, according to Dominic, 'a great satisfaction' to Justin, who felt he had made something genuinely new rather than trading on nostalgia.

Hardy was a history graduate from Oxford University. He studied film in Bournemouth and scriptwriting in California before building a career in television and factual drama.

He directed episodes of The Bill and London's Burning, and developed a strong niche in historical reconstructions and documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4 and CNN, including Princes in the Tower, Trafalgar Battle Surgeon, The Relief of Belsen and Spanish Flu: The Forgotten Fallen.

His work earned him nominations for both a Bafta and an Emmy.

Dominic said his brother had 'really became a filmmaker in his own right,' adding: 'We've lost him and we've lost that larger-than-life presence looking over us all.'

In recent years Hardy had also taught screenwriting at University College London, passing on his craft to a new generation of students.

Wrath of the Gods will now open without the filmmaker who led the effort to bring it to the screen, closing a family saga that extended far beyond a single film.

Jakob Butturff obit

Jakob Butturff Dies at 32

He was not on the list.

Jakob Butturff died unexpectedly on Friday, July 31 at the age of 32.

Butturff was an eight-time PBA Tour champion, winning one major in the 2019 USBC Masters.

“Jakob was one of the most unique players in PBA history,” PBA Commissioner Tom Clark said. “Fans marveled at his delivery, as he rode a wave of strikes into becoming a top player in the sport, capable of winning at any time, in any event. Jakob was kind, he was respectful, and he was a champion. He will never be forgotten. Our hearts are with all Butters touched on his one-of-a-kind journey.”

Butturff’s breakout came during the 2016 season.

He won his first two PBA Tour titles and dominated the PBA Regional Tour, winning a record nine titles and earning West Region and Northwest Region Player of the Year honors.

Butturff amassed 27 PBA Regional Tour titles and added Northwest Region Player of the Year awards in 2017 and 2018.

During the 2019 PBA Tour season, Butturff finished as the runner-up in Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year voting.

He won three titles, including his signature major win in the 2019 USBC Masters, finished runner-up to Jason Belmonte in the PBA World Championship, and ranked second to Belmonte in points and earnings.

Butturff was a seven-time member of Team USA. He won the 2017 QubicaAMF World Cup and helped Team USA win multiple gold and silver medals.

He bowled the 28th televised 300 game in PBA history during the 2020 PBA Tour Finals.

Upon hearing the news, countless PBA Tour players expressed their sympathies to Butturff and his family on social media.

“It ain’t supposed to be like this,” wrote EJ Tackett. “It’s nothing short of soul crushing. Butters was one of the guys that would give the shirt off his back for anyone in need and he showed that time and time again. The bowling world lost today and it will never be the same. We all love you buddy. Until we meet again my friend.”

“Butters, I don’t even have the words right now, but just know you will be missed, loved, and always remembered!” wrote AJ Johnson. “You had one of the biggest hearts and made everyone laugh! I love you Butters, now go give your mom the biggest hug you always gave us!”

“The PBA has lost one of its kindest,” Jason Belmonte wrote on social media.

Butturff was born and raised in Las Vegas, and also lived in Phoenix, Ariz. and Binghamton, N.Y.

In Memoriam: Jeff Conolly

Jeff “Monoman” Conolly, front-man of the great Boston garage band Lyres has passed away after a battle with cancer. Conolly was under-appreciated in rock and roll lore, but a seminal figure in the Boston music scene and the garage rock resurgence, not only with Lyres but with his previous band DMZ as well.

I saw Lyres in September, 1988 at The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, after spinning their fantastic debut On Fyre since I was a sophomore in high school a few years earlier. It was visceral and raw and powerful as hell, but still had the hooks and melodies it took to pull me in.

His passing may not make the RIP segment at the Grammys or the 6 o’clock news, but those who know his music will remember him forever. RIP Jeff Conolly.

Vicki Wickham, Influential Music Manager and Songwriter, Dies at 87

She was not on the list.

Vicki Heather Wickham, the English talent manager and songwriter whose behind‑the‑scenes work helped launch the careers of Dusty Springfield and the group Labelle, passed away on July 31 2026 at the age of 87.

Born in April 1939 in rural Newbury, England, Wickham grew up in the nearby village of Inkpen. Her first foray into the entertainment world came through television, where she served as an assistant producer on the 1960s music show Ready Steady Go! and later advised on fashion for The Mod’s Monthly, a short‑lived magazine that debuted in March 1964.

Wickham’s most enduring legacy lies in her management of Dusty Springfield and Labelle during pivotal moments of their careers. In 1970, she co‑wrote the English lyrics to Springfield’s only British number‑one hit, “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me,” collaborating with Simon Napier‑Bell. The song, adapted from the Italian “Io che non vivo senza te,” remains a hallmark of the era.

Beyond management, Wickham turned to authorship in 2000, co‑writing Dancing with Demons: The Authorised Biography of Dusty Springfield with Penny Valentine. The biography draws on Wickham’s long‑standing relationship with the singer, offering an in‑depth look at Springfield’s life and career.

In her later years, Wickham was openly gay. A 2012 BBC Radio 4 interview revealed that she met her partner, musician Nona Hendryx of Labelle, in 1970 and that they remained together thereafter.

Her contributions were formally recognised with the Music Industry Woman of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. Two years later, in 2013, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to music.

Over more than five decades, Wickham’s work as a manager, lyricist and producer helped shape key moments in British and American pop music. Her guidance of Springfield and Labelle not only produced chart‑topping hits but also influenced the broader cultural landscape of the 1960s and 1970s.

Wickham’s death marks the loss of a figure whose influence spanned television, fashion, songwriting and artist development. Her legacy endures through the enduring popularity of the songs she helped create, the biographies she authored, and the artists she mentored.

The music community has noted her passing with respect for her pioneering role in an industry that has historically under‑represented women and LGBTQ+ professionals. While no official statement has been released by her estate, industry observers view her career as a testament to the impact that dedicated managers and writers can have on the trajectory of popular music.

At present, there are no announced posthumous releases or memorial events scheduled. Wickham’s contributions will continue to be referenced in discussions of 1960s pop culture and the evolution of artist management.

Lithuania's first post-independence prime minister Kazimira Prunskienė dies at 83

She was not on the list.

Kazimira Prunskienė, the first prime minister of independent Lithuania, has died at the age of 83, the Delfi news portal reported on Thursday.

Prunskienė was the first head of the Lithuanian government following the restoration of independence and remained a prominent figure in national politics for several decades.

Born in 1943 in the village of VasiuliÅ”kės, Å venčionys district in northeastern Lithuania, Prunskienė graduated from high school in Vilnius and earned a degree in economics.

She later became a doctor of economic sciences and a professor. In the late 1980s, during the independence movement, she was elected as a people's deputy.

Alongside other signatories, Prunskienė signed the Act of the Re-establishment of the State of Lithuania on March 11, 1990, and shortly afterwards became the first prime minister of the post-independence era.

That year, as Lithuania sought international recognition, she met with the leaders of the United States, Britain and France.

Prunskienė resigned as prime minister in January 1991, shortly before the bloody events of January 13 at the TV Tower, after the Supreme Council overturned a controversial decision by her government to raise food prices.

Prunskienė remained active in Lithuanian politics in later years, serving as a member of parliament from 1996 to 2008 and as agriculture minister from 2004 to 2008.

She led several political organisations, including the Lithuanian Women's Party, the New Democracy/Women's Party, the New Democracy Party, the Union of Peasants and New Democratic Parties, and the Lithuanian People's Party.

During the Soviet occupation, she was a member of the Communist Party.

In 2012, Prunskienė suffered a stroke. The incident impaired her speech, and she did not return to active politics due to her health condition.

Since the restoration of independence, Prunskienė had faced allegations of possible cooperation with the Soviet KGB.

A years-long legal process concluded in January 2011, when the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania issued a final ruling overturning a decision by the Lustration Commission.

The commission had previously unanimously found that the politician had secretly cooperated with the KGB during the Soviet occupation, carrying out intelligence, counter-intelligence and ideological surveillance tasks.

Nirmal Purja, the British-Nepali mountaineer whose renowned career was featured in the 2021 Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan on Thursday, July 30, his company has confirmed. He was 43.

Purja was one of 10 people killed in the tragedy.

Elite Expeditions, Purja’s company, said in a statement, “Today, it is with profound sadness and immense heartbreak that we confirm that Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja, tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak. We have also received confirmation that other members of the expedition sadly did not survive. Today, we mourn not only Nims, but every life lost in this tragedy.”

The statement, posted on Instagram – read it in its entirety below – continued, “The world has lost one of mountaineering’s greatest climbers, a leader who inspired millions through his courage, humility and unwavering belief that human potential is far greater than we often imagine.”

Purja’s brother Kamal later said in a statement, “It is with the heaviest heart that I share the devastating news that my beloved younger brother, Nirmal ‘Nimsdai’ Purja, and the other climbers are no longer with us. Although our hearts are broken, we are incredibly proud of you. Your legacy will live forever.”

Born in Nepal and later serving in the British army, Purja was best known for his 2019 accomplishment of scaling the world’s 14 highest peaks in just over six months. “It has been a grueling but humbling six months,” he said at the time, “and I hope to have proven that anything is possible with some determination, self-belief and positivity.”

The 14-peak adventure was chronicled in the Netflix film 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible (see the trailer below). “The biggest strength I have is that I have no fear,” the indefatigable Purja says in the trailer.

In a statement, Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah said that “the tragic death of six Nepalese and four other foreign climbers, including world record holder Nirmal Purja, in the Karakoram mountain range of Pakistan, has shocked us. The history of their courage, dedication, and contributions will always remain inspiring.”

Purja served in the British military for 16 years and was awarded an MBE in 2018 for his achievement in extreme high-altitude mountaineering.

Purja, who lived in Hampshire, England, is survived by his wife and and three-year-old daughter. Complete information on survivors was not immediately available.

Chargers legend Billy Ray Smith Jr. passes away

Billy Ray Smith Jr. remembered for life of service and strength

He was not on the list.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Chargers legend Billy Ray Smith Jr. passed away on Wednesday, July 29. He was 64 years old.

Smith built a legacy that stretched far beyond the football field — from a state championship in Texas to the College Football Hall of Fame, and from the San Diego Chargers' defensive line to the living rooms of San Diego television viewers.

Billy Ray attended Plano Senior High School in Texas, where he helped the team win a Texas Class 4A state championship. He then followed in the footsteps of his father, Super Bowl champion Billy Ray Smith Sr., to the University of Arkansas, where he matched his father as a two-time unanimous All-American.

Billy Ray was known not only for his physical gifts — size, speed, and strength — but also for having one of the highest IQs in the NFL.

That combination made him a prime prospect in the 1983 NFL Draft. The San Diego Chargers selected him 5th overall, launching a decade-long career spent entirely in the Bolt helmet, wearing number 54.

Billy Ray became one of the franchise's most respected players, earning team MVP honors and leaving a lasting mark on the organization. He often said coming to San Diego to play for the Chargers was everything he ever dreamed of.

His impact, however, reached far beyond the game. Alongside several teammates, Billy Ray helped create "Bates Street," an after-school program that provided sports and activities for local kids. He and other Chargers players helped fund the program for years, giving young people opportunities, guidance, and a place to belong.

It was an early example of a commitment to service that would define the rest of his life. Billy Ray devoted himself to dozens of charities across San Diego.

It was during a United Cerebral Palsy telethon that he met ABC 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt. The two married in 1990. Two years later, they welcomed their daughter, Savannah.

Billy Ray embraced fatherhood with the same enthusiasm he brought to everything else.

"She'll have a wet diaper, and I'll be changing the wet diaper, and she'll wait until the diaper is off to bring the heavy artillery," Smith said.

With Kimberly and Savannah by his side, Billy Ray launched a successful career in broadcasting, joining Channel 10 as sports director in 1993. He later became a San Diego radio staple on the long-running "Scott and B.R." show, worked network television broadcasts of college and professional football, and remained a fixture at ABC 10News throughout his career.

His commitment to serving others never wavered. As co-founder of the Great Friends Foundation, Billy Ray helped raise millions of dollars for local military families, touching countless lives across San Diego.

“When he was drafted by the Chargers in 1983, he came into this city, and he did it with a generosity of spirit, which is how he lives his life. He never said no. Ever," Kimberly said.

In early July, that spirit of service brought one more honor. Billy Ray and Kimberly were named the Nice Guys of the Year, with the 46th annual gala set for October.

College Football Hall of Famer. Chargers legend. Broadcaster. Philanthropist. Devoted husband and father. Billy Ray Smith Jr. showed that true strength is measured not just by what you accomplish, but by how many people you lift up along the way.

The family released a statement Wednesday afternoon:

It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of our beloved Billy Ray Smith Jr., who passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Billy Ray faced his long journey with dementia caused by CTE with unmatched bravery, dignity, and strength.

Billy Ray brought so much joy, light, and laughter to the world as a devoted father, husband, son, and loyal friend. On the NFL gridiron for a decade with the Chargers, and decades that followed in sports broadcasting, Billy Ray earned deep respect from teammates, colleagues, and fans, who he cherished in return.

He leaves an irreplaceable void in our lives. His undeniable legacy will live forever in our hearts, and we thank our incredible community for the outpouring of love and support.

Details regarding a memorial celebration will be shared at a later date.

Tempe Mayor Corey Woods shared a statement following Mitchell's death:

“There is no part of Tempe that has not been influenced by the legacy of The Honorable Harry Mitchell. During his 24 years on the Tempe City Council (16 of those as Mayor) he voted to build our iconic City Hall in Downtown Tempe. He was also a huge advocate for the Rio Salado Project, which eventually resulted in the creation of Tempe Town Lake.

He went on to represent our city in the Arizona State Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. Our City is truly grateful for the lifetime of leadership that he has left us.

The Honorable Harry Mitchell is a bonafide legend and was a true statesman in every way. He will be dearly missed by each and every one of us.”

U.S. Representative Greg Stanton shared the following statement:

“Harry Mitchell was as Tempe as it gets.

Born and raised here, he graduated from Tempe High, attended Arizona State University, and returned to teach American Government at his alma mater for three decades, shaping generations of young minds along the way.

He gave decades of his life to the city he loved, serving on the Tempe City Council, as Mayor, and representing the area in the Arizona Senate. He worked to revitalize downtown Tempe, working hand in hand with ASU and local stakeholders, and played a key role in bringing Tempe Town Lake to life. His fingerprints are on nearly every corner of his hometown.

Running for Congress was the culmination of a lifetime of service. A Blue Dog through and through, Harry frequently reached across the aisle—but he was never afraid to take a hard vote. He lost his seat in Congress after voting for the landmark Affordable Care Act, extending health coverage to tens of thousands of his constituents. But he never regretted it, not for a moment. That was Harry: a public servant who put people before politics, always.

I'm sending my condolences to his children, Mark and Amy, and grandchildren.”

Arlene Smith, Lead Singer and Co-Founder of The Chantels, Dies at 84

She was memorable on the heartbreaking hit “Maybe,” which brought the R&B girl group from the Bronx instant fame in 1957.

She was not on the list.

Arlene Smith, an original member of The Chantels who wrote and sang the lead on the R&B girl group’s classic 1957 hit, “Maybe,” has died. She was 84.

Smith died Wednesday of natural causes in a hospital in her hometown of New York City, her friend Matt Beckoff told The Hollywood Reporter.

Born on Oct. 5, 1941, Smith had received classical training and performed at age 12 at Carnegie Hall when she and Lois Harris, Sonia Goring, Jackie Landry and RenƩe Minus auditioned for record producer Richard Barrett, a member of the doo-wop group The Valentines.

The teenagers had been singing together for years in the choir of Saint Anthony of Padua on Prospect Avenue and 166th Street in the Bronx.

They were signed in summer 1957 by End Records, and their first single, “He’s Gone” — written by Smith about a boyfriend while she was practicing piano — peaked at No. 71 on the Billboard Hot 100 that August.

However, the quintet’s second single, “Maybe,” recorded at a church in midtown Manhattan and released in December, hit it big, advancing all the way to No. 15 on the pop chart and No. 2 on the Billboard R&B chart.

The heartbreaking tune, about a woman trying to win back a lost love, made The Chantels one of the first female R&B vocal groups to enjoy nationwide success, and in 2003, Rolling Stone placed “Maybe” at No. 199 on its list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

They group helped pave the way for acts like The Shirelles. “They were our inspiration,” Shirelles singer Shirley Alston Reeves once said. “The harmonies were outrageous. We thought it was angelic. Of course, it made us want to harmonize the same way.”

After appearing on TV’s American Bandstand, The Chantels in 1958 released songs including “Every Night (I Pray)” and “I Love You So,” which made it to Nos. 40 and 42 on the Hot 100, respectively, before they were dropped by End Records the next year.

After Smith embarked on a solo career, the reconstituted Chantels continued as a quartet as got back inside the Top 20 in 1961 with “Look in My Eyes.”

In the 1970s, Smith fronted a group called Chantels that featured Carol Douglas (who would have a disco hit with “Doctor’s Orders”) and Louise Bethune.

When her music days were over, she taught elementary school in the Bronx until her retirement. She was not married and had no children.

The Chantels were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002 and made to the final ballot for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and 2009 without moving forward.

Beloved 'Rosie the Riveter' dies at 100

She was not on the list.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Jeanne Gibson, who represented the “Rosie the Riveter” campaign during World War II, died Thursday at age 100.

Pacific Historic Parks announced her death in a social media post the same day.

“Our thoughts are with all who knew and loved Jeanne, especially her fellow Rosies and the many friends whose lives she touched,” the Facebook post read.

In 1944, when she was just 18-years-old, Jeanne left her Minnesota home to go and work as a welder in Seattle, helping build destroyers for the war effort.

She often traveled to Hawaii to share her experiences and participate in commemorative events at the Pearl Harbor Memorial with Pacific Historic Parks.

“Her warmth, encouragement, and enthusiasm made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of meeting her,” Pacific Historic Parks wrote. “She especially loved encouraging young girls to pursue their dreams and reminding them that they could achieve whatever they set their minds to.”

Gibson and her follow Rosies were collectively awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2024 to recognize their contributions to the war effort.

It is with profound sorrow that we bid farewell to Jeanne Gibson, our beloved Rosie the Riveter, has passed away today, July 29, 2026, at the remarkable age of 100. With her passing, we don't simply mourn the loss of a beloved friend, we honor the life of an American hero whose courage, dedication, and unwavering spirit helped shape history, and will continue to inspire generations to come.šŸ•Š️šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

At just 18 years old, Jeanne left her home in Minnesota in the summer of 1944 and answered her nation's call, becoming a welder at Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle. With determination and grit, she helped build destroyers that strengthened the Allied war effort during World War II. She later continued her service with the Army Transportation Corps in Juneau, Alaska, embodying the resilience and patriotism of the Greatest Generation.

Yet Jeanne's legacy extended far beyond the war. She earned her Ph.D., dedicated three decades to teaching, earned her private pilot license, and spent the rest of her life proving that courage, determination, and purpose know no age.

In 2024, Jeanne and her fellow Rosies were collectively awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, one of our nation's highest civilian honors, recognizing the extraordinary women whose sacrifices and determination helped secure victory during World War II.

To all of us at Pacific Historic Parks, Jeanne was far more than a Rosie, she was family. She traveled to Hawaiʻi time and again to share her remarkable story with visitors, inspire local students, and ensure that the sacrifices of the Home Front would never be forgotten. Her radiant smile, generous heart, and boundless enthusiasm touched every life she encountered.

She had a special gift for encouraging young girls, reminding them that no dream was too big and no obstacle too great. Through her words and her example, she inspired generations to believe in themselves and pursue lives of courage, service, and purpose.

Jeanne remained a tireless advocate for preserving the legacy of the Rosies, volunteering at Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park on "Rosie Fridays" and ensuring the stories of the women who helped win the war would continue to inspire future generations.

In one of life's poignant moments, just days before her passing, Jeanne was celebrated with a Wall of Honor banner at the park she loved so dearly and recognized during a San Jose Earthquakes halftime ceremony honoring Bay Area heroes. It was a fitting tribute to a woman whose life was defined by selfless service, quiet strength, and extraordinary grace.

Though Jeanne has taken her final flight, her legacy will never fade. It lives on in every story she shared, every young person she inspired, every life she touched, and in the enduring example of courage she leaves behind.

Our hearts are with Jeanne's family, her fellow Rosies, and all who were blessed to know and love her.

Rest in peace, Jeanne Gibson.

Oscar-winning musician Glen Hansard dies in Dublin motorcycle crash

He was not on the list.

Academy Award-winning singer-songwriter Glen Hansard has died overnight in a motorcycle crash in Dublin’s Lucan.

The renowned musician was killed in the single-vehicle crash near Strawberry Beds in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

GardaĆ and emergency services were alerted to the collision on the R109 Lower Road, between Tinkers Hill and Rugged Lane, at 4.30am.

GardaĆ confirmed the man received treatment at the scene of the incident and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Mr Hansard’s agency released a statement to media shortly before noon, expressing the musician’s family’s shock.

“With broken hearts, we announce the passing of Glen Hansard who passed away, in the early hours of this morning, following a road traffic accident in Dublin.

“Glen’s family is deeply shocked and heartbroken by this tragic loss and respectfully requests privacy at this extremely difficult time.

“The family is grateful for the support they have received and wishes to thank the emergency services who attended the scene.

“As this matter remains the subject of an active Garda investigation, no further comment will be made at this time.”

Mr Hansard (56) is married to Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa and they welcomed their first child in October 2022. They split their time between Ireland and Finland.

Mr Hansard first emerged from Dublin’s legendary busking scene before forming The Frames in 1989, earning a reputation as one of Ireland’s most compelling live bands.

His international profile grew through his role in The Commitments, before worldwide acclaim arrived with the independent film, Once.

Starring alongside MarkĆ©ta IrglovĆ”, Mr Hansard co-wrote the Oscar-winning song Falling Slowly, launching The Swell Season onto the global stage and cementing his reputation as one of Ireland’s finest songwriters.

This year, the acclaimed singer-songwriter was working on his show Transmissions East and West, a powerful live presentation inspired by the communal spirit and raw energy that defined his remarkable musical journey.

Mr Hansard’s career spanned more than three decades. In 2015, he spoke of how his mother was to thank for his musical success, after she paid for him to make his first record.

The singer said his mother Catherine took out a loan so The Frames could make their first demo.

“I got to the point – and I don’t know how I got there – where I needed to make a demo of my own songs, so I went to Sun Studios and asked them how much it would cost,” he said.

“And my mother went to the bank manager and asked could she get the house done up. The bank manager gave her IR£3,000 (€3,800), IR£2,000 (€2,540) of which we spent on the demo.”

After recording the CD at the Dublin studio, Mr Hansard was invited to listen to it with The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood, The Police’s Stewart Copeland and former Island Records chief Denny Cordell at brewery heiress Marina Guinness’s Kildare home.

Mr Hansard admitted he didn’t even recognise Wood, but was star-struck by Copeland.

“I knew who Stewart was, but I didn’t know who Ronnie was. I was a huge Police fan when I was a kid and they were commenting to me on my music, saying ‘Well done, it’s really good’. Then Denny said: ‘Can I see you play?’

“I said: ‘You can come in and see us busking’, so he did and then I met Chris Blackwell of Island Records,” Mr Hansard told an episode of RTE’s The Works Presents.

Mr Hansard was renowned for treating fans to free gigs, and was known for his annual Christmas Eve busking on Grafton Street to raise money for the Dublin Simon Community.

Mr Hansard started the annual tradition as an impromptu acoustic sing-song in 2010. Over the years, the gig outside Dublin’s iconic Gaeity Theatre would attract thousands to the spot, to witness Mr Hansard and musical friends Bono, Imelda May, Riptide Movement, The Script and The Coronas sing Christmas tunes alongside classics.

A well-known activist, Mr Hansard helped lead the December 2016 ‘Home Sweet Home’ occupation of Apollo House in Dublin, alongside other artists and activists, to turn a vacant NAMA-owned office building into a temporary shelter for over 30 homeless people.

He organised and performed alongside musicians like Hozier, Christy Dignam, and Kodaline to raise awareness and support.

Mr Hansard spoke to the Irish Times in 2023 about becoming a father for the first time in his fifties.

“For 52 years I was the most important person in my own life, and then suddenly I got a complete perspective shift, and I’m absolutely loving it,” he said.

“To be of service to this young mind, to this young life, is just – I can’t believe I didn’t do it before now. Isn’t it true that when the student is ready, the teacher appears?

“I was always the guy in the band, so I was just busy making my story, making my life, moving forward.

“I guess opportunities were there, of course, but it just wasn’t really on my list of things to do. Then I met Maire, and it was, like, oh, there’s the mother of my children.

“Is this the happiest time of my life? I would say it’s probably the most adventurous, the time I feel most engaged of all of my life so far.

“I love this life, and I get to play to people all over the world who are interested in hearing what I have to say, people who actually pay me to do it.

“That’s a huge privilege. I’m not a pop star, so I’m not restricted by tunes needing to be 3½ minutes.

“There’s nobody in my corner telling me to shorten an album, to make it longer or to wear my hair this way, that way or the other. I get to be who I am, and that privilege is not lost on me.”
