South Porcupine, Ontario native Bob Nevin, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Toronto Maple Leafs and captain of the Rangers after a 1964 trade to New York, has died at 82.
Word came via the NHL Original Six Alumni, whom Nevin had been an active member at monthly luncheons in Toronto to sustain the spirit of the vintage game.
The right winger was one of many Maple Leafs stars who came from Northern Ontario, earning his way to Toronto to play for the Weston Dukes and Marlborough juniors.
Getting a couple of brief looks with the Maple Leafs in the late 1950s, he made it as a regular in 1960-61, as Punch Imlach’s team turned the corner and won Stanley Cups in 1962 and 1963.
Nevin had 21 goals in his first full season and was runner-up to teammate Dave Keon for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s top rookie.
He also appeared in 27 playoff games the next three seasons.
Late in the 1963-64 season, he was traded to the Rangers in a blockbuster, along with Dick Duff, Rod Seiling, Arnie Brown and Bill Collins for Andy Bathgate and Don McKenny.
That deal helped guarantee the Maple Leafs a third-straight title, while Nevin became a fixture in Manhattan, with five seasons of 20 to 30 goals, before ending his 1,128-game career in Los Angeles, Minnesota and with the WHA’s Edmonton Oilers.
Later, Nevin served as an assistant coach with the Kings during the 1976-77 season.
Nevin scored 21 goals as a rookie with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1960–61, and finished second in the Calder Memorial Trophy voting to teammate Dave Keon. He formed a line with Red Kelly and Frank Mahovlich, helping the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup in 1962 and 1963. In 1964, Nevin was traded to the New York Rangers, along with four other players, in exchange for Andy Bathgate and Don McKenney. He played for the Rangers for seven years until being traded to the Minnesota North Stars for Bobby Rousseau. Nevin also played for the Los Angeles Kings, where he recorded a personal-best 72-point season and led the Kings to a franchise record 105 points. Following his time with the Kings, Nevin would head to the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association (WHA). He retired after participating in thirteen games with the Oilers after breaking his collarbone. Nevin played 1128 career NHL games, recording 307 goals and 419 assists for 726 points. Nevin was one of the first players in the National Hockey League to wear contact lenses, beginning in the early 1960s. During a 1962 game against the Blackhawks, Nevin lost his lens, and play was stopped to find it.
