Star Wars actor Peter Sumner dies at 74
He was not on the list.
Peter Sumner, the Australian actor who played a small but
memorable role as a Death Star security officer in the original Star Wars, has
died at age 74. His agent confirmed the news to the Associated Press.
Sumner was the lone Australian to work on the 1977 film,
according to the Sydney Morning Herald, which first reported his death. On set
for just two days, he portrayed Lt. Pol Treidum and delivered such lines as,
“TK-421, do you copy?”
Although Sumner’s Star Wars screen time was limited, he
nonetheless became a draw at sci-fi conventions and received thousands of
letters from fans. “I was so moved by some of the early letters from kids who
were sick and the only thing in their lives was Star Wars that I decided I’d
answer every single letter,” the actor told the Morning Herald last year. “And
I did.”
Sumner’s other screen credits included the 1970 film Ned
Kelly (which also starred Mick Jagger); the children’s show Play School; and
other Australian series including Spyforce, Heartbreak High, and Cluedo.
