R.I.P. Lewie Steinberg of Booker T & The MGs 1933-2016
He was not on the list.
Lewis was 82 years old and battling cancer in recent years.
Steinberg was an MG for Booker T from 1962 to 1965 and played on the classic ‘Green Onions’.
Steinberg played on the first two MGs albums, ‘Green Onions’ and ‘Soul Dressing’ before leaving. He was replaced by Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn.
Lewie Steinberg was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. He also has a Brass Note on Beale Street’s Walk of Fame in Memphis.
The death of Lewie Steinberg means the only two remaining original members of Booker T & The MGs are Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper.
Steinberg was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Baptist parents.
He joined Booker T. & the MG's in 1962. He was featured on "Green Onions" and its B-side, "Behave Yourself", as well as the albums Green Onions and Soul Dressing. Steinberg left the group in 1965 and was replaced by Donald "Duck" Dunn.
Steinberg was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, as a member of Booker T. & the M.G.'s
Steinberg received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Steinberg died from cancer on July 21, 2016, in Memphis, at the age of 82.
