Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Earl Morrall died at age
79.
The Dolphins confirmed Friday that Morrall died. Former
teammate Charlie Babb said his health had been in decline.
Morrall, who played in the NFL for 21 years, started nine
games for the Dolphins during their perfect 1972 season.
Morrall subbed for Bob Griese when he broke an ankle during
the '72 season. Morrall went back to the bench when Griese returned for the AFC
title game and the winning Super Bowl.
The Dolphins finished 17-0, the only undefeated season in
NFL history.
Morrall was the NFL MVP for the Baltimore Colts in 1968, but
the heavily-favored Colts lost Super Bowl III to Joe Namath and the New York
Jets.
Morrall also played for the San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh
Steelers, Detroit Lions and New York Giants
